Explore the fascinating world of ancient Rome at the WA Maritime Museum these school holidays.
Travel back in time and discover the determination, machines, and genius that carved the great Roman Empire in Ancient Rome: Epic Innovators and Engineers. This family-friendly exhibition features carefully reconstructed replica machines that reflect one of the most technologically significant times in human history.
During the summer school holidays enjoy a range of 'Ancient Rome' themed activities, as well as our usual Fishing Clinics.
Saturday 4 January - Sunday 19 January 2020, 10am – 2pm
Join us for a celebration of all things from ancient Rome, as we uncover the wonders of the city that became an empire. Decorate your own paper-craft gladiator helmet or goddess mask to take home. Ward off enemies and play with a Roman warrior’s ship in our toy touch trolley! You can also decorate a Roman battleship and watch it sail across our animated digital screen!

The Grey Company: Gladiator Games

Want to know what it takes to become a gladiator? Join The Grey Company for an insight into the training and techniques needed to compete in one of ancient Rome’s favourite forms of entertainment, the gladiator games! The Grey Company specialises in historical combat and re-enactment, and is bringing live action demonstrations back to the WA Maritime Museum to showcase the incredible combat skills of a gladiator. Explore fascinating table displays of ancient Roman culture and creativity, and enjoy talking to people who love to bring their passion for history back to life. Join in the fun, and don’t forget to cheer for your favourite gladiator!

Rome Show: A Day at the Colosseum
Thursday 9 – Friday 17 January 2020, 10.30am, 11.45am, 2pm
Explore a 'day in the life' of the Colosseum; the ancient home of stadium entertainment and gladiator combat. Step inside our own 'Colosseum' where an 'archaeologist' and 'tour guide' will be your hosts in this fun and entertaining show. Join in a 'chariot race' and have fun with the 'gladiator game'! Do you know much about ancient Rome? Have fun in our Fact or Fiction interactive game that will take you on a myth busting journey of ancient Rome. You will even get to hold your own 'fact' or 'fiction' paddle – let's see if we can bust these myths together!

Pizza Perfetto! Workshop
Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 January, 10am – 12pm
Come and learn the secrets of making 'pizza perfetto' (perfect pizza) with expert chefs at Fremantle’s Pizza Bella Roma restaurant, South Terrace, Fremantle. Did you know that ingredients like tomatoes and peppers were introduced to Italy centuries ago? Over time they became part of the cornerstone of traditional Italian cuisine. This fun workshop will have your hands floured and punching dough with the best of them!
Pizza making workshops are presented in partnership with Pizza Bella Roma. Suitable for ages 6-12. $15 per child, includes pizza-making activity and entry to the Ancient Rome exhibition. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Adult entry to the workshop is free – however, adult entry fees apply for the Ancient Rome exhibition. Bookings essential (places are limited). Junior Fishing Clinic
Thursday 16 and Friday 17 January 2020, 9.30am – 11.30am
Join one of Recfishwest’s popular and SunSmart fishing clinics at the WA Maritime Museum. Participants will learn how to be SunSmart while learning some fishing basics like casting a line and fish handling, as well as how to fish sustainably and look after their fishing environment.
Fishing rods, sunscreen, bait and equipment will be supplied. $5 per child. Suitable for ages 8-14. All participants must wear a hat and be directly supervised by a parent or guardian for the duration of the clinic.
