There is plenty to see and do at Yagan Square as we celebrate the Noongar season of Makuru.
Yagan Square will be buzzing with activity this winter as we celebrate the Noongar season of the first rains, Makuru. Running from 21 June to 21 July, our Makuru celebrations involve a number of activities and events at Yagan Square.
Help us celebrate and come and join in on the fun! There is something on offer for everyone during the Noongar season of fertility, and the first rains, Makuru.
Kids Winter Storytelling
6 - 9 July, 10 July, 11 - 13 July, 17 & 20 July | 11am - 3pm | Free
Bring the kids down for a 30 minute storytelling session every day through the school holidays. Come and grab a winter warmer food special from our Market Hall and settle in for a traditional tale or two with the Wind Wanderer or Freedom Fairies. The Freedom Fairies will also be on hand to help kids create magical winter-themed arts & crafts. Find out more.
Marshmallow Toasting and Snowfall
21 June - 6 July every Thursday, Friday & Saturday, 4pm - 7pm
8 July - 20 July every Monday, Wednesday & Friday 2pm to 5pm, Saturday 4pm to 7pm
As part of Makuru at Yagan Square, make your way up to our amphitheatre to toast marshmallows over the fire pit and enjoy the magical 'snow' as it falls over the area. Spend $20 or more at any of our Market Hall food outlets to get your free marshmallows and skewers for toasting. Find out more.
Live Ice Sculpting
21 June - 19 July every Friday | 11am - 12pm | Free
See a 140kg block of ice be transformed into a unique sculpture before your eyes in our Market Hall alfresco area. Try to guess what the finished sculpture will be with a different design each week. Once completed, the ice carving will be on display in our Market Hall foyer for the remainder of the afternoon. Find out more.
