What's more there's a Taco Day and Burrito Day too - more great excuses to indulge in Mexican munchies! Wouldn't it be great to fly off to Mexico, the birthplace of these delicious dishes, to try the original recipe? Even better, we'll tell you where to get a serving of nachos in Perth right now! But first a little history.
The Story Behind Nachos Day
The original recipe for nachos is still used today in Mexico, where the idea was born out of necessity.
Back in 1943, unexpected restaurant guests and an absent chef inspired the maitre d', Ignacio Anaya, to improvise. Nicknamed Nacho (a shortened form of Ignacio), Anaya found tortillas, cheese and jalapeño peppers in the kitchen. So he cut the tortillas into triangles, melted the cheese on top and sprinkled them with jalapeños.
The dish became known as Nachos Especiales, or Nacho's Special Dish, and around 30 years of mouth-watering servings later, Nachos Day was established in honour of Anaya, who died in 1975.
Mexico's Moderno Restaurant in Piedras Negras, where Anaya later worked, has continued using his recipe to this day. Tempted to book a flight? If you can't quite get there in time, don't despair. There are some excellent Perth nachos eateries; here are just 6 of the best.
Mexican Restaurants Serving Nachos in Perth

Pancho's restaurants in Victoria Park and Mount Lawley are named for Pancho Villa, a renowned figure of the Mexican Revolution, hailed as a Robin Hood figure, fighting against the rich to improve the lives of the poor. The story adds a quirky edge to the restaurants' welcoming ambience.
Pancho's is a great choice for enjoying nachos in one of Perth's most popular suburbs with a bunch of friends. Alternatively, gather at home and order from the takeaway menu.
There are no less than five types of nachos to choose from, plus a vegan option. Besides regular nachos with Pancho's special sauce, there are two options with either chilli con carne or shredded beef, Jalapeño Nachos for an extra bite of that wonderful chilli tang, and Pollo Nachos with diced chicken breast.
As if that weren't enough, the dessert menu features nachos too - with chocolate sauce, whipped cream, chocolate ice cream and strawberries.
The menu is huge, so be ready to resist temptation - or just give in and enjoy a feast, washed down with Mexican beer or cocktails. Where better place to celebrate Nachos Day?

This humble family-friendly, family-owned Mexican cafe has been serving up Tex Mex on Fremantle's 'cappuccino strip' for almost four decades.
Nachos are a perfect example of Tex Mex food, which is a fusion of Mexican and US cuisine. After Ignacio Anaya invented the dish, much of the credit for its global fame was attributed to businessman Frank Liberto, who introduced it at sports events in Texas. The US version was adapted using a kind of cheese sauce rather than grated cheese.
Mexican Kitchen creates four versions of nachos, adding various toppings and sour cream to the original corn chips with cheese and salsa, and a vegetarian version can be made on request.
There's a great beer, cocktail, mocktail and wine menu, so get ready to settle into this little spot, indoors or at a streetside table watching Freo life go by. The Tequila Garden can be booked on a Friday or Saturday night for groups of 22-26.
