Not only is Mandoon Estate WA’s most awarded boutique winery, it’s also one of the most family friendly places in the Swan Valley.
In the grounds of the restored homestead is a large grassy lawn with picnic tables and plenty of room to spread a rug, as well as a fully fenced playground, all on the banks of the beautiful Swan River overlooking 100 year old vines.
Visitors are asked not to bring their own food and drink, saving you the effort of packing a picnic in the morning! Instead, you can create your feast on arrival by choosing from a range of charcuterie, cheeses, pizzas, soft drinks and of course exquisite wine.
And if any of the grownups in your family prefer a brew to a wine, the Homestead Brewery serves a range of beers and hearty food to satisfy everyone, including burgers and pizzas. On weekends enjoy the spit roast with live music completing the festive family atmosphere.
Family run Oakover Grounds is one of the earliest vineyards in the Swan Valley, dating back to the mid 19th century, and now among the most welcoming family friendly places in the Swan Valley.
All the family can relax and let off steam here, with plenty of grassy space around the grounds for picnicking or a game of cricket. Alternatively, take the kids out on a free paddle boat or settle in for some barramundi fishing on the lake. Everyone will love the Giant Connect Four game, and staff can give you information on their fun Nature Hunt activity to challenge the lively ones!
There’s a varied menu for breakfast and lunch, including kids’ meals, served in the industrial style restaurant or out on the deck, complemented by good coffee or Oakover’s boutique wines.
For a simple, friendly approach to Swan Valley food and wine, Carilley Estate is another great choice for families.
You will love the wines and vineyard views, and the kids will enjoy playing in the gardens, playground and cubby house. Stay for lunch indoors or alfresco at the family friendly restaurant, surrounded by vines and trees. The menu has something for everyone, and suggests pairings chosen from a wide selection of wines.
Olive Farm Wines
Olive Farm Wines - a fourth generation family winery producing a range of sparkling, white, red and fortified wines - makes it their business to offer a warm welcome to families.
Right next door is The Cheese Barrel, where you can indulge in the ideal combination - selecting from a huge choice of cheese from around the world to enjoy with a glass from the cellar door.
The Cheese Barrel has a large open space for the children to play, including two sandpits protected by shade sails - an ideal spot when the weather starts to warm up!
Edgecombe Brothers Estate
Known for its premium table wines, fortified wines and liqueurs, Edgecombe Brothers also serves up delicious Swan Valley food and wine under vines and wisteria in its family friendly cafe.
Sitting on the banks of Lake Yakine, surrounded by vineyards and lawns, this spot is ideal for little people to burn some energy within sight of the outdoor tables.
Equally popular with families are the gourmet home-made burgers on sale every Friday night in the Burger Kitchen.
You can purchase some fresh local produce to take home too, along with a few bottles of wine perhaps…
Make a Weekend of It
Why not plan a whole weekend with the kids, and stay at the Swan Valley Oasis Resort right in the midst of the wineries, or enjoy the experience of a farmstay such as Settler’s Rest - ideal for families with young children.
There are plenty of holiday cabins too. Discovery Parks Swan Valley, for example, is close to wineries and attractions, yet surrounded by farmland.
