Summer is traditionally peak festival time in Perth, with the calendar slowing down as we get into autumn; but nowadays, autumn is full of awesome events and festivals to excite, delight, celebrate and more. From art to comedy, gourmet fine dining to fried chicken and beer, there's something for everyone this autumn in Perth. Enjoy!
Perth Good Food Month
This amazing tribute to the talented greats of Perth's hospitality scene returns for its seventh year of tantalising foodie tastebuds for Perth Good Food Month! There's four dazzling feature events taking place in Perth City this month, as well as 20 Friends of Good Food Month dining experiences.
With bespoke dining experiences, family-friendly activities, cooking classes and more, you’re bound to find a ton of delish fun. Some highlights include Esmay Pop-up with Hearth Restaurant (20 April) at The Ritz-Carlton, Perth (Good Food Month's travelling restaurant with a local focus); Fraser's Seafood Cooking Class (17 April) at Fraser's Restaurant and Nashville-style hot chicken fine-dining style at From Noma to Nashville: Belles and Drasko's Make Hot Chicken (21 April) aboard The Raft. Enjoy the culinary creativity and passion of up-and-coming young Perth chefs at Young Chefs Lunch presented by Citi (18 April) at Shadow Wine Bar at Alex Hotel; brush off your passport for a culinary trip through Europe and The Americas for the Travellers Long Lunch (17 April) at Mayfair Lane; and for one night only, join Rockpool Bar & Grill for The Rockpool Quartet Dinner (29 April) - a collaboration with Sydney and Melbourne sister restaurants Rosetta Ristorante, Spice Temple and Saké Restaurant & Bar to deliver an exclusive menu showcasing dishes from each premium brand and showcasing the very best of West Australian produce - a not to be missed event for food lovers!
Toast to the Coast
Lovers of a fine tipple are in for a treat at The Marina Mindarie this April, thanks to Toast to the Coast (17 April)! Enjoy gourmet food, beer, wine and cider tastings at this family-friendly free-entry afternoon dishing up LIVE music, food stalls, street performers, roving entertainment and kids' activities. You'll find gourmet food and street food stalls including food tasting; WA wine, cider and craft beer tastings, street performers and roaming entertainers, as well as kids activities.
Chicken & Beer Festival
Next up on the foodie fest must-do itinerary is the Chicken & Beer Festival (23 - 25 April), perfect if you're more into food truck fare than fine dining (although, why not both?) Held in Subiaco Market Square for the Long Weekend in late April, this fun family-friendly festival comes with music, carnival rides, activities and, most importantly, EVERY type of finger lickin' chicken you can imagine!
From New Orleans to Korean, Indonesian to Indian, Soul, Brazilian and Jamaican flavours, you can travel the world with your tastebuds as you savour all manner of interpretations for this dreamy dish, prepared and cooked fresh by local Perth establishments and food trucks such as Satchmo, Baolicious, Smokr, Munchy Machine and more. Wash that fantastic fried chicken down with a great selection of over 60 beers served ice-cold by some of your favourite craft beer breweries including Pirate Life, Little Creatures, Fat Bull, Whalebone, Good Drinks, Mountain Goat and many more. There's also bars exclusively for cider, wine and cocktails, and vegans and vegetarians won’t be left out - some festival vendors will be serving up delicious meat free alternatives! But wait, there's more: entertainment options will be plentiful over the weekend, with buskers, big screens broadcasting live AFL games, silent disco for the groovers, carnival rides (dodgem cars and wave swinger), carnival games and garden games for everyone to enjoy.
Get ready for a frothin' good time at Claremont Showgrounds, with a huge variety of breweries, cideries, wineries and a tasty selection of food, rides and entertainment on offer. The epic range of craft beer is only the tip of the pint-glass at Froth Town (16 - 18 April): good drinks, good food and good times, with a wide selection of the best of local produce and entertainment. Whether it's after work frothies with the crew on Friday night, soaking up the sun with brewers on Saturday, turning it up with the gang on Saturday night, or fitting in some quality time with the family during the Sunday family session - there's something to tick every box.
City Wine 2021
Wine-lovers won't want to miss this incredible celebration of Perth's wine culture at City Wine 2021 (21 & 22 May) presented by CMS Events! Back in late May for another year at its lush new home of Russell Square, enjoy an incredible line-up of wines, beers, cider, cocktails and delicious food from our extraordinary state, with over 200 wines to try and buy, and 45+ stalls including WA wineries, breweries, distillers, foodies and more. Grab yourself a carefully-selected beverage, chill to local music artists and DJs from the entertainment stage, and keep yourself warm with plenty of heaters and cover. Feeling fancy? WA's Great Graze
Grazing has become a bit of a buzz word in the food industry, with grazing boards and experiences becoming more and more popular. It's a great way to taste small portions of food and flavours in one sitting. WA's Great Graze (10 April - 1 May) is a cross-regional celebration of WA agriculture, featuring an extensive program of grazing events, offerings and experiences across the state. As well as a special grazing market (18 April) at Perth City Farm, where you can stock up on WA's finest grazing goodies, John Kosovich Wines in the Swan Valley will be hosting a series of Cellar Door Graze Days and Stringybark Winery and Restaurant in Chittering will be offering a special Wine and Graze experience Wednesday to Sunday from 10 April to 1 May. Whether your favourite is fresh seafood, delicious duck, the very best in lamb and beef dishes or tasty vegetarian, you will find it at Stringybark Winery & Restaurant - their special Turkish Upgrade Platter for 2 includes chorizo, prawn, marinated feta and local delicious olives with an accompanying bottle of medal winning Stringybark Verdelho 2019.
Bickley Harvest Festival
Celebrate the end of Harvest at the Bickley Harvest Festival (1 & 2 May)! Celebrate the unique tastes, sights, and sounds of the Perth Hills at over 19 participating venues in the Bickley Valley region. The Bickley Valley thrives in the cooler autumn sun presenting visitors with a myriad of colours throughout the vineyards, orchards, the abundant deciduous trees and glorious gardens. Visitors can partake in a variety of activities such as enjoying the local artistic talent or indulging in tastings from boutique owner-operated wineries and cider houses with hand crafted wines and ciders. Take home fresh local produce or treat yourself to delicious lunches – all while taking the time to admire the magnificent surroundings of the Bickley Valley.
Autumn of Sport
AFL Premiership Season 2021
Here in Perth, we love our sports year-round - and autumn is a particularly exciting time for it with the AFL Season in full swing! The upcoming Round #6 will be the Dockers v North Melbourne (24 April), which looks to be a promising game since the Dockers have managed to thrash the Roos by over 10 goals in their last two meetings. Round 7 brings the RAC Derby (2 May) back to Optus Stadium as the game that divides a state and pits mate against mate takes place. The Eagles will be looking to continue their dominance against the Dockers, with West Coast having won the past 11 derbies dating back to 2015. Fremantle, meanwhile, will be looking to record their first AFL win over West Coast at Optus Stadium. Round 8 (9 May) will see Fremantle will be looking to continue their winning ways against 2020 Preliminary Finalist the Brisbane Lions. Bring your mates (or the fam) for a thrilling day out! To really make your AFL day out special, join The Camfield, Captain Cook Cruises and The Reveley for their AFL Dine and Cruise - dine riverside at The Reveley, Elizabeth Quay before taking a scenic cruise down the Swan River, arriving at the Burswood Peninsula one hour prior to the game for VIP treatment at The Camfield. Get amped up in Western Australia's favourite beer garden before you take your seats at Optus Stadium or stay and watch live on the 5 metre Big Screen amongst the roaring game-day atmosphere!
Perth Wildcats Season 2020-21
It ain't just about AFL this autumn - basketball lovers are in for a treat too! See the Perth Wildcats vs Melbourne United (16 April) and Perth Wildcats vs Illawarra Hawks (18 April) at the RAC Arena. Our home team are proudly the back-to-back reigning NBL Champions, boasting the competition’s most impressive trophy cabinet with ten titles to their name. So come be a part of Australia’s best game night atmosphere and get behind the Perth Wildcats in 2020/21!
West Coast Fever
Lovers of live netball are in for a treat - West Coast Fever are back in action from May to August! Five Saturday night blockbusters at RAC Arena will headline the season, with the club commencing their 2021 home campaign facing off the NSW Swifts on 8 May in front of a WA crowd for the first time in almost a year. On'ya!
Perth Comedy Festival
They say laughter is the best medicine, and there's nothing to shake those cool-weather blues like a month-long celebration of laughter and LOLs from funny folk from around the world who call Australia home, and homegrown comedy talents! You'll find Perth Comedy Festival (19 April - 16 May) shows at the Regal Theatre (Subiaco), Astor Theatre (Mt Lawley), Comedy Lounge (Perth City) and Freo.Social (Fremantle) from mid-April to mid-May, including Aussie comedy legend Paul McDermott (of Good News Week and Doug Anthony All Stars fame), award-winning WA musical comedian Matt Storer, UK stand-up legend Ross Noble and more.
Revealed Exhibition 2021
Another annual arts event is Revealed Exhibition 2021: New and Emerging WA Aboriginal Artists (26 March - 23 May) at Fremantle Arts Centre, presenting the best new and emerging Aboriginal artists from remote, regional and metro WA. The exhibition showcases artworks across painting, installation, textiles, photography, print media, video, jewellery, carving and sculpture from over 100 talented Aboriginal artists. The best part - all artworks in the exhibition are for sale!
Travel back in time in Toodyay at the free annual Moondyne Festival (2 May)! Everyone is encouraged to dress in pioneer period costume, so cosplay up as a floozie, swaggie or street urchin; or wax up and enter the fabulous Moustache Competition! The legend of bushranger Moondyne Joe transforms this picturesque historical Avon Valley town into a lively all day festival, the highlight of the day being the re-enactment of Moondyne Joe's various escapades throughout the town, his arrests and mock trials. Join in the fun with Moondyne Joe as he runs around town, robbing shops, escaping custody and being a general menace. If interactive historical reenactment sounds like a helluva great day to you, don't miss out!
York Motorcycle Festival
Another star Avon Valley attraction, the York Motorcycle Festival (11 April) is a free, family-friendly event held in the quaint heritage town of York. You'll find motorbike stunt shows, live music, Show & Shine, trade displays, Vintage Collective Markets, motorbike rides for kids, and a charity motorbike ride for Beyond Blue. There will also be FMX demos, stunt riders, food trucks and live entertainment. Great fun!
Rediscover Rockingham Tram
If rediscovering Rockingham has been on your to-do-list, now is the time to go! A new hop-on-hop-off tourist tram is operating on Sundays until 25 April, offering a one hour guided journey of stunning beaches, historic attractions and aquatic wildlife encounters in Rockingham. You can stay on for the full hour tour, or hop on and hop off at any of the four designated spots - Rockingham Museum (where there is free untimed parking), Rockingham Foreshore, Point Peron and the Penguin Island Ferry Terminal at Mersey Point - stop here to catch the ferry to Penguin Island.
Youth Week WA KickstART Festival
Youth Week WA KickstART Festival 2021 is a week-long state wide celebration of young creatives aged between 12 - 26, kicking off with Festival Day on Saturday 10 April and continuing to Friday 16 April with a range of free performances, forums and collaborative workshops that celebrate the artistry and backgrounds of WA's young creatives. Brazilian Beach Carnaval & Parade
Brazilian Beach Carnaval sambas its way back to Scarborough Beach, serving up a delicious slice of Rio de Janeiro at the Brazilian Beach Carnaval & Parade (10 April)! This FREE community event is back again for its third year - expect a day full of traditional Brazilian food and drinks, vibrant music and live entertainment, shaking up Scarborough Beach and stretching out into the Amphitheatre. It is the ultimate celebration for the WA Brazilian and Latino community located in their spiritual home in WA - Scarborough Beach. Join this vibrant community celebration on the beach and meet, connect, eat and celebrate the art and culture of Brazil!
ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Kings Park
ANZAC Day, 25 April, is a solemn day of remembrance, gratitude and national pride; join the RSLWA to pay respect to the men and women who served and continued to serve our great nation, at the annual Dawn Service at the State War Memorial in Kings Park and Botanic Garden from 6am. RSLWA recommends that participants arrive from 4am onwards. At 5.50am, the lights will go out and all will be quiet as the service begins. The service is followed by the ANZAC Day Gunfire Breakfast at Government House and the annual ANZAC Day March down St Georges Terrace.
