April is a glorious month to be in Perth!
The weather is starting to mellow with the arrival of autumn, but still offers enough warmth and sunshine so we can keep on enjoying all the most popular Perth attractions, picnics, road trips, beach visits, and bushwalks.
For those who are still struggling to overcome post-festival season blues (oh Fringe Festival, how we miss you!), you will be glad to know that there will be plenty of fun things to do in Perth to keep you and your family busy and exploring our fair city this April. We have done our research and have come up with the highlights of what’s on in Perth this April.
The Fremantle Street Arts Festival has been and gone, but never fear, there will be plenty more arts events to stimulate your mind this month.
ATTRA Light Festival – Claremont Park – 6th to 8th April
Claremont Park will be lit up with the dazzling light inspired installations of more than 20 Artists for three nights this April. There will be interactive projections, light sculptures and other performances on show throughout the weekend.
In addition, sizzling fire inspired food options will tantilise your taste buds with wood-fired pizzas, barbeques and flame-grilled burgers, and toasted marshmallows on the menu.
PROPEL YOUTH ARTS X AGWA: ILLUMINATE – Art Gallery of Western Australia - 14th April to 20 June
As part of the annual celebration of young people in WA, six emerging artists and one young curator have been selected to create a new exhibition that responds to A Window on Italy. Come to this free event to see how these artists craft a contemporary response to art that spans centuries.
Perth Comedy Festival – 23rd April to 20th May 2018
Fans of giggles and guffaws will be delighted with this year’s Comedy Festival line-up. Held in various venues around Perth, this year’s festival features international comedy heavyweights such as Stephen K Amos (UK), Arj Barker (USA), Tom Segura (USA), Jonathan Pie (UK), Jason Byrne (IRE), and Urzila Carlson (RSA/NZ), as well as homegrown talent the likes of Pauly Fenech, Wil Anderson, Em Rusciano, and Nazeem Hussain.
Whatever style of comedy you prefer, whether it be fast laughs or political satire, there will be an act at this annual event to tickle your funny bone.
Spanish Film Festival – Luna Palace Cinemas – 26th April to 16th May
The Spanish Film Festival is celebrating its 21st anniversary with a specially selected program of films and events.
The festival will kick off with its famous Opening Night Gala where guests can enjoy a glass of Freixenet Cava on arrival before the Australian premiere of the dance-floor comedy THE TRIBE(La Tribu) before an after party at Connections Night Club with Torres wine, tasty Spanish food by Pinchos and live entertainment.
Fairbridge Festival – 20th to 22nd April 2018
Now in its 26th year, Fairbridge Festival is one of the most popular festivals in Perth. This three-day family camping festival is a celebration of folk, roots, blues, and world music attracting talent from around the globe.
Located 5 km north of Pinjarra and 100 km south of Perth, you can camp, or even glamp, in Fairbridge Festival’s glorious bushland setting with sweeping views over the Darling Escarpment, while you enjoy the music, the markets and the heady aromas emanating from the food stalls.
This year’s event hosts international acts including Sheelanagig, The Lost Brothers, and Cara, as well as local talent such as Carla Geneve, Perch Creek, and Mama Kin Spender.
Reverb Festival - G.O. Edwards Park – 13th to 15th April
Reverb Festival is the fiercest new festival to take over Perth and offers a universal range of artists and genres to provide for all tastes. Xavier Rudd will be headlining the festival on Sunday with a full 90 minute set. Other acts you will be able to catch over the weekend include The Jezabels, The Preatures, Cloud Control, Sola Rosa, The Beautiful Girls, and more.

Buddha’s Birthday and Multicultural Festival – 14th & 15th April 2018
The Buddha’s Birthday and Multicultural Festival is one of Perth’s biggest multicultural festivals. Located at the iconic Elizabeth Quay, this is a valuable opportunity to learn about Buddhism and new cultures, at the same time as enjoying a fun day out the whole family can enjoy. There will be a variety of activities to entertain the crowds over this free, two-day event, including baby blessings, mass meditation sessions, multicultural performances, a vegetarian food fair, numerous cultural displays and fireworks.
Anzac Day – 25th April
Paying tribute to the fallen diggers on Anzac Day is part of a proud Australian tradition. If you are considering where to go in Perth to pay your respects, there several spots around the metro area which offer a beautiful Dawn Service:
- Kings Park offers the largest Anzac Day service in Western Australia with over 40,000 people expected to attend. Starting at 4.30 am, “Spirit of Anzac” archival footage will be screened adjacent to the State War Memorial on Fraser Avenue, before the Dawn Service commences at 5.45 am.
- Fremantle offers a stunning Dawn Service with panoramic views from the top of Monument Hill starting at 5.50 am.
- Rottnest Island has a long military history and the Anzac Day is always an important event on the island’s calendar. The Dawn Service will commence at 6am in the glow of the sunrise over Thomson Bay, followed by a Gunfire Breakfast cooked by RSL volunteers.
- Mundaring’s dawn service starts at 6.15am at Blackboy Hill, Greenmount, followed by a Gunfire Breakfast to be hosted at at Chidlow Village Green at 8.00 am. The parade will begin at 9.15 am followed by morning tea and a military exhibition in Chidlow hall.
Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships – 14th to 22nd April
For this annual affair, members from Australia’s 311 Surf Clubs will descend on the beautiful Scarborough coastline to compete in more than 450 beach and ocean events, ranging from the traditional surf swimming, boats, rescue and resuscitation, and surf best races, to the more modern ironman and ironwoman events.
Members of the public will also have the opportunity to participate in the 2km swim race alongside the lifesavers competing for the Championship, without having to be an active member of a Surf Life Saving Club.
This family-friendly event is the largest of its kind, comparing only to the likes of the Commonwealth Games.
Kids Kerfuffle – Rickman Delawney Reserve - 21st April
The April School Holidays would not be complete without a trip to the City of Stirling's Kids Kerfuffle, where your little adventurers can tackle the ultimate kids' obstacle course for a free family fun day out.
There will be slip and slides, climbing walls, tyre runs, monkey bars, inflatables and loads of other obstacles to challenge and entertain kids from 6 to 12 years. For only $10 your little bundle of energy can have 30 minutes on the course and conquer the obstacles as many times as they can.
There will also be free performers, hands-on art and crafts, music shows, bubbles, games, activities for kids under 6, food and more.
Bookings are essential for the obstacle course and can be made via Eventbrite.
Nexus Toy Fair - 21st April 2018
Indulge your inner geek at Nexus Toy Fair, a quarterly event for collectors of all ages. One of the biggest and most popular toy fairs in Perth, fans of sci-fi and fantasy, comic books, pop culture, anime, gaming, action figures, trading cards, books, and posters are bound to find something new to add to their collections here.
This event takes place from 9am to 12pm at the Leisurelife Park Recreation Centre, East Victoria Park.
Nitro Circus – The Next Level Tour – 22nd April
Hold onto your handlebars, extreme sports fans, because Optus Arena is hosting Travis Pastrana’s new show which the organisers have claimed is “simply too big to fit indoors”. Dirt bike, BMX, scooter and in-line athletes, will perform ridiculously hair-raising stunts and crazy, never-before seen tricks on ramps up to 60 feet in height, in an innovative new set up, perfected at the Nitro World Games, which is now touring for the first time.
