Just a short drive from Perth, Rockingham's spectacular coastline, teeming marine life and safe, calm waters has given it the well-earned reputation of Perth's marine playground. The Shoalwater Islands Marine Park particularly deserves a spot on your must-do sun & fun list, with water activities galore - and, of course, the adorable fairy penguins of Penguin Island.
Penguin Island is only a 5 minute ferry ride across the marine park, but feels like a completely different world thanks to its white sandy beaches, surrounded by crystal clear waters, and the stars of the show: wild dolphins, rare Aussie sea lions, and the world's tiniest penguins (who are fed by island rangers during penguin feeding sessions three times a day). With ferries departing hourly from 9am to 3pm, you can spend as long or as little as you like to swim, snorkel, picnic and explore the nature trails and beaches before catching a return ferry at your leisure. Or for a more bespoke experience, the Penguin Island Wildlife Cruise, with Perth Wildlife Encounters, is a one-hour glass bottom boat cruise, taking in the spectacular coastlines of Penguin, Sea and Bird Islands before disembarking on Penguin Island for a guided 30 minute walk. Take in the spectacular beaches, coastal look outs and nesting sea birds of this stunning island nature reserve, with insightful guidance that makes the experience even more meaningful.

A sleepy fishing village not so long ago, Mandurah has transformed into a hugely popular tourist destination. With frolicking dolphins in picturesque Venetian canals, a perfectly manicured foreshore that's popular for summer BBQs, swimming and surfing beaches to suit every taste, and some of WA's best seafood, it’s a slice of paradise only a short drive from Perth. It’s also the perfect place to base yourself to get away from the hustle and bustle of urban life and into the tranquility and beauty of the Peel Region.
So, where to start? Well, when people think of Mandurah, one of the first things that comes to mind is catching crabs. If you've ever wanted to catch some of Mandurah's almost-legendary crabs, good news: you don't have to figure out the ins and outs of crabbing by yourself (and get mighty crabby in the process, if you'll excuse the pun). Important information about recreational crab fishing, including bag and size limits, can be found on the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development website.
Mandurah isn't only known for their crabs, the region is also home to the Western Rock Lobster. Join Mandurah Cruises on their Lobster Catching Tour for the ultimate hands on fishing experience. Board their luxury vessel Reel Affair II, and head off shore to 12 pre-set lobster pots. Become part of the action by helping pull the pots, reset them and have the opportunity to feel, size and learn more about Western Australia's lobster conservation efforts. The best part? You can take your share of the catch home and the crew will give you their hot tips to best prepare your lobster feed!
Next up is a very different and intimate way to experience the waterways of Mandurah thanks to ECO BBQ Boats, allowing you to captain your own (frankly, adorable) donut-shaped boat, seating up to 6 or 10 people. Float around the beautiful Mandurah Ocean Marina and Venetian Canals in luxurious style, savouring your own onboard floating BBQ spread. You can either BYO food and drinks, or make life even more cruisy with pre-prepared BBQ meat packs. No skipper's ticket is required, and all equipment is supplied, so why not give it a go?
Back to land, The Cut Golf Course is a fabulous way to while away a few hours working on your golf game while enjoying gorgeous, relaxing panoramic Indian Ocean views. This world-class golf course boasts a modern clubhouse, Restaurant & Bar, Pro shop, full-size driving range and men's and ladies change rooms. They also serve up the very best Aussie produce for lunch and dinner throughout the week, making them a firm favourite for golfers and non-golfers alike.
