The last weeks of winter are here, and it's time to enjoy everything you love about Perth in winter!
In particular, what a great place it is to get your comfy game on! Whether you're in the mood for getting cosy fireside at a restaurant or cafe; chillin' to music in an intimate venue; romancing at a B&B or inspiring your artistic muse, you'll find the comfy vibes you're looking for in Perth. And in this quieter season when so many of us are home watching Netflix, it's easy to get out of the house while maintaining your social distance, and still enjoy the best of Perth in winter!
Flavour delights by the fireplace
Nothing says winter cosiness like enjoying a delicious hot meal beside a fireplace, basking in the heat of the fire and being warmed inside and out. You'll find fab fireplaces for your winter dining needs at quite a few Perth restaurants and cafes, and here's some that particularly stand out.
West Perth local favourite Julio's Italian Restaurant is located within the Sage Hotel West Perth, in a lovingly restored 115 year old heritage building beautifully blended with the hotel tower. The hotel has indoor, private or al fresco dining options to enjoy fresh authentic Italian cuisine with a modern twist.
If you're hearing the call of the ocean but keeping away from the wintery ocean breeze, Island Market is just the ticket! Fireplace cosiness, gorgeous panoramic views of the Indian Ocean - what more could you want? They're open from 8am to late, perfect for weekend breakfasts and date nights alike - and there's something truly peak comfy about watching the sunset over Trigg Beach in winter as you enjoy a sensational fireside dinner.
Naked Apple Cider House in the Perth Hills is a family-friendly (and furbaby-friendly!) cidery and restaurant set on 6.4 hectares of lush gardens and native bushland - perfect for a leisurely post-lunch walkabout! There's also an adventure playground for the kids to explore while you enjoy a romantic tête-à-tête, a catch-up with friends and family, or just some quiet time to relax with a book.
The Swan Valley is known as the food bowl of Perth for good reason, with its delicious fresh produce and fabulous wines. The Henley Brook a.k.a "the Hen", works closely with local wine makers, brewers and fresh food producers to dish up an experience you will want to squawk to the neighbours about; and the Oakover Wines Grounds Cafe is housed in an eclectic industrial-style restaurant, with a kitchen that serves the best local produce (including a fab kids menu to satisfy fussy young tastebuds!)
Further north of the Swan Valley, in Chittering, Stringybark Winery and Restaurant is one of the oldest wineries in the region. Warm yourself by the open log fire with a glass of their award-winning wine while you enjoy a menu of fresh seafood, delicious duck and the best lamb and beef dishes. Make sure you leave room for their amazing desserts.
Music & laughs in comfy little places
Feeling like soothing your soul with beautiful tunes, or looking for a warming winter belly-laugh? Perth's got you covered! The Comedy Lounge in Perth City is arguably Perth's most known comedy venue, having welcomed international acts and student open-mic comedians alike.
Lovers of music and 'hygge' (feelings of charmed coziness) will adore Joanna's Candlelit Soirées at the iconic Kidogo Arthouse on the shores of Fremantle's Bather's Beach, where you can enjoy a warming candlelit three-course dinner in an intimate gallery setting. From jazz and blues to opera and everything in between, each night offers music by a different artist, making each soirée experience that much more unique. The three course meal begins with Joanna's freshly baked Irish soda bread, followed by a warm hearty soup, a vegetarian and meat main course and finishes off with something sweet. What a perfect way to spend a winter night!
Last but not least, the ever-popular Freo.Social is a barrel of winter fun! Housed in the refurbished historic Artillery Drill Hall, this multifaceted venue has something for everyone; whether it be the Otherside Brewing Co nano brewery fondly named 'The Brewshed', the bustling beer garden, or the state of the art entertainment hall showcasing local talent and touring acts. Local beer, live music and entertainment, and relaxed vibes - just the ticket!
Winter doesn't have to be boring, so take off those PJs and bunny slippers, tell Netflix you're no longer watching, and get ready for some great winter activities!
One of our favourite ways to spend a winter day is gallery-hopping, and there's many lesser-known gallery gems to explore in Perth; Zig Zag Gallery in the Perth Hills is definitely worth a visit (and a great addition to your Perth Hills itinerary). This gallery holds diverse and fascinating exhibitions year-round, combining professional exhibitions with emerging artist shows, and it's beautiful purpose-built space full of natural light makes it seriously comfy. Also in the Perth Hills is the Mundaring Arts Centre that presents contemporary art exhibitions alongside a shop showcasing local artists and craftspeople.
Travel to York, in the Avon Valley, and visit the Botanicalia Cafe & Gallery Shop, that features works from local artists and makers within a beautifully restored heritage building and the York Art Space and Gallery Company which houses the largest permanent display of fused art glass in WA. If you're looking for some unique Indigenous experience, head to the Maalinup Gallery - an Aboriginal owned gallery offering cultural activities and talks, bush tucker and beautiful artwork and hand painted objects by local Aboriginal artists.
For a bit of indoor adventure to say goodbye to the winter blues, Glowing Rooms 3D Mini Golf is just perfect! The Glowing Rooms provide a unique mini golf experience under ultraviolet light, surrounded by intense colours and stunning hand-painted artworks brought to life with magical 3D glasses. Golf balls appear to hover above the ground, while the animals and characters come to life and almost reach out to touch you - a truly extraordinary experience.
Scitech is another winter fave, with six interactive galleries, lively science performances and educational puppet shows, a hands-on science lab and Australasia's largest planetarium, Scitech offers a range of fun and educational science experiences for all ages. Plus, visit the Discovery Shop for unusual science gifts, and don't miss the Scitech's unique adult events throughout the year. Visit with the family for a whole day of fun, or become an annual member for endless science action!
