The school holidays are here again, and Perth is the place to be with kids - there's so much to see and do!
There's a fantastic line-up of kids activities these winter holidays, from escaping a shipwreck island, to entering real-life fairytale dioramas, traversing the jungles of Africa (in the heart of Perth City!) and getting to hang out with prehistoric dinosaurs. Young (and young at heart) explorers, take heed - it's adventure time!
Full steam ahead for some serious fun at the WA Shipwrecks Museum! You've been shipwrecked on Traitor's Island, and as one of the lucky survivors, your only hope is to follow the trail of clues that will lead you to safety. Bring your own clipboard to help you complete the challenge.
The trail is free, and as a reward, you can take away your own beautiful treasure chest pack ($2), with 'jewels' and shiny decorations to complete at home. To learn more, visit our feature on Shipwrecked!
Escape… to the country
Now that you've escaped Traitor's Island, it's time to escape the hustle and bustle of the big smoke and head to the gorgeous Chittering Valley for fresh country air, awesome activities, and the perennial school holiday favourite: fruit picking! Every weekday during the winter holidays, Golden Grove Orchard will be opening its doors for families, and with lots to do and see, this is sure to be a hit with the kids.
At $22 per adult and $15 per child, enjoy your day-trip to the country with farmer-guided tractor rides, animal petting, storytime, picnicking in the citrus orchard, burning off some energy on the nature playground, and more! You can also pick fresh, delicious citrus fruit straight from the trees, and only pay for what you take home, so you can continue to enjoy the experience in the days to come. It’s a great way to make memories (and juice!)
Another fab getaway destination, Toodyay is only 80km from Perth City, but feels like a world away. The charming town's tranquility, hospitality, and amazing valley views make it a fantastic place to visit year-round, and kids are in for a special treat at the Toodyay Fairytale Farm! You'll find indoor and outdoor displays of all your favourite fairytale and nursery rhymes, friendly farm animals to interact with, a vintage toy museum, and outdoor activities for the whole family to enjoy.
You already know that the coast is the place to be for summer beach vibes, but it's a ton of fun in winter too, so pull on your woolies and go exploring! You're sure to have a great time admiring the views from one of the many stunning coastal walking trails in the Perth Beaches region, getting friendly with photogenic quokkas in the recently reopened Rottnest Island, or even learning to fish with The Fishing School's School Holiday Program at The Marina Mindarie.
And if you're keen on the unique experience of cruising along Venetian-esque canals while spotting friendly dolphins, Mandurah Cruises has exciting news: they've launched a new 1.5 Hour Dolphin & Scenic Marine Cruise. To celebrate, kids cruise FREE these school holidays with the $64 family pass!
Hang out with dinos!
Scitech is reopening for the school holidays, and everybody's favourite prehistoric reptiles are ready to give your family a roaring welcome back with Meet the Dinosaurs! You'll also find your usual family favourites: from super cool science shows and roar-some puppet shows to stellar journeys in the Planetarium and hands-on learning in Discoverland. The kids will have so much fun, and it's the perfect place to spark a love of STEM to last a lifetime.
Go wild at Kids Carnival!
It's so relaxing to spend time rugged up at home in winter, but sometimes you've just gotta burn off that energy and let loose! Luckily, City of Perth has your back - the Perth City Kids Carnival will be in Elizabeth Quay from 11 to 17 July to keep the kids busy and having fun. Enjoy an hour of unlimited amusement rides at $10 for up to four people; each booking entitles you to a $10 gift card to spend at one of many vendors at Elizabeth Quay or Yagan Square. You'll find kids' rides for all ages from 2+, so bring the family and have a ball!
Explore the jungles of Africa… in Forrest Place!
These school holidays, Forrest Place has transformed into a jungle maze, with surprises around every corner! Complete with lush jungle vegetation, life-size baby giraffes and elephants, and an exciting 'find-the-animal' competition with a whopping $1,000 prize pack up for grabs.
