Winter is a great time of year to pull up the covers and sit with a nice hot drink and your favourite book. But, when you have kids this is near impossible to imagine.
So, for those of us who haven't got a live-in babysitter to give you relief from the full-time job of parenting, here’s a list of the best things to do with kids over the school holidays. These events aren't just for kids either, parents are also going to enjoy taking part, because who would turn up the opportunity to feel like a kid again?
Scitech Saurus Exhibition
Open until the end of October, this Scitech exhibition has received rave reviews from the little people it speaks to. The dinosaur kid's activities introduce interactive experiences and explore what it means to be a paleontologist (AKA Dinosaur Scientists). Kids are exposed to everything from hatching dinosaur eggs to the mechanical movements it takes for the beasts to walk. In amongst these great kid's activities are hands-on fossil finding expeditions, which is everything any tyke could hope for from their day. Find out more about the exhibition.
Now, if your kid really loves dinosaurs, they (and you) are in luck, until 17 July, because the Perth Zoo is also hosting a prehistoric reptile exhibition, Zoorassic Park. It's a once in a lifetime experience for all who go, so make sure you get tickets soon!
Fremantle and the Fremantle Arts Centre
Fremantle is bursting with kid's activities this winter. One must mention is the Fremantle Arts Centre, which is currently host to kids holiday courses, taking place from 4 - 15 of July. The Fremantle Arts Centre offers a range of courses suited to kids of all ages, and even adults. Kids from 18 months to 18 years are welcomed to the centre where the possibilities are endless. Younger children are engaged with animation, clay and papier Mache, while older kids refine their art skills with jewellery making, urban art and theatre.
Also taking place in Fremantle is the Winter Festival, so once you've completed the kid's art activities, head to Fremantle Esplanade Park for a full winter experience of ice skating, falling snow, music and entertainment.
AQWA Shark Sleepover
The Shark Sleepover at AQWA is easily one of the coolest experiences that guarantees rock-star status for any parent who signs their kids up. The sleepover includes dinner and breakfast, a movie (projected onto ship sails), marine-life education, 'camping' underneath a full ceiling of stunning underwater creatures and plenty more. If you do nothing else this winter, be sure to take this opportunity.
This may not seem like the number one thing to do with kids, but surprisingly walking the Bibbulmun Track is a fantastic way to break up the typical winter events of staying indoors and watching your stockpile of TV shows and movies. It's suggested to stick to 5km for little legs, children aged 4 years and over. Some suggested tracks include:
- Asher Rd to Hewett's Hill Campsite - East of Perth (beginner)
- Brookton Hwy to Brookton Campsite - South of Perth (beginner)
- Perth Hills Discover Centre to Ball Creek Campsite - North of Perth (intermediate)
The Bibubulmun Track also hosts a three-day Teen Trek, where kids get to camp out and experience hiking with other teens. Participants have the opportunity to qualify for the bronze or silver Duke of Edinburgh Award program when they tackle this trek. The Teen Trek takes place between 11 - 13 July.
Whiteman Park opens up these school holidays with a range of amazing kid's activities, from arts and crafts to the LEGO® museum and everything in between. Kids are fully catered to with terrarium building and pottery sessions - but bookings are essential as there are limited spaces!
What more could you want from one location? How about wineries? The best part about Whiteman Park is that it's nestled with the Swan Valley and in amongst some of the best wineries in WA. Carve out some time to grab a bite to eat at a local winery, cidery or brew house and take back something for yourself.
So for kids and parents alike, try one of these school holiday activities this winter, there's a full range of events here.
