Fremantle Arts Centre
Fremantle Arts Centre, Fremantle

It's spring and it's school holiday time - does it get any better? It can be hard deciding what to do during the school holidays, not because there isn't much to choose from, but because there is too much! We've narrowed it down to five fun things to do with kids!

1. Enjoy an art & craft workshop

Sign the kids up for something creative with one of Fremantle Arts Centre's kids art courses. The program has plenty of great options with courses in animation, game design, creative clay, drawing, sewing, printmaking, urban art and more!

Does your little one love pirates? Then take them down to Freo for some swashbuckling adventures at the WA Museum - Maritime and WA Museum - Shipwreck Galleries. Get the kids dressed as their favourite pirate or mermaid for heaps of fun activities like making their own pirate hook, creating a 3D Dutch trading ship and listen to salty pirate tales.

The Mundaring Arts Centre and Midland Junction Arts Centre will be running School Holiday Art Workships with an exciting program of visual arts workshops for children aged 6 - 18 years. They can learn the art of 3D felting, create a beautiful Babuska doll from wool tops, learn how to paint with watercolours and create a wearable art costume.

2. Get up close to local wildlife

The IGA Perth Royal Show starts this weekend, and along with all your favourite rides, showbags and exhibitions, kids can pat a range of farm animals including bunnies, piglets, baby alpacas and lambs in the Creatures Great and Small Pavilion. Plus, you can see judging of cattle, horses and chickens, the dog and cat shows, sheep shearing and goat and camel displays.

Spring marks the opening of Penguin Island, and during the school holidays adults can travel at kids prices on the Dolphin, Penguin & Sea Lion Cruise and Penguin & Sea Lion Glass Bottom Boat Cruise with Rockingham Wild Encounters. Visit our school holidays page for the special discount codes.

Every Saturday, kids can hang out with super cute baby animals at the Fremantle Markets. Come and cuddle chickens, ducklings, bunnies, guinea pigs, lambs, kid goats, piglets and, depending upon availability, a calf, alpaca, or miniature horse.

3. See a live performance

Meet the most misunderstood character in fairy tale history on 29 and 30 September at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre as part of their Splash! School Holiday Program.  The is the story of the infamous Big Bad Wolf - with a twist!

The Don Russell Performing Arts Centre in Thornlie presents In a Dark, Dark Wood on 4 October. Travel deep inside a magical realm with the Barking Gecko Theatre Company in this original re-imagining of Grimm’s classic fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel.

Perth Zoo

4. Get dirty with gardening

Go Potty at Perth Zoo this spring! Learn how to make your garden flourish in a fun, hands-on planting activity that is sure to grow your children's curiosity about the environment. Plus, enjoy four free free stage shows celebrating life outside and taking children to a world where the real and the unreal collide.

Learn all the gardener's secrets at the Araluen Botanic Park's Junior Gardener Workshops. Kids can build their own worm farm, plant seeds and enjoy a guided walk around the park and morning tea.

Spring into the city these school holidays and visit Granny's Greenhouse at The Urban Garden, to make colourful paper flowers and pin-wheels. In the astro-turfed urban garden, Gardener Dan will show kids how to make an origami plant pot and plant a seedling to take home.

Adventure World

5. Visit your favourite Perth attraction

Featuring Dragon's Kingdom, a dedicated kids zone with 8 attractions perfect for little ones, plus the ever popular Kahuna Falls and Australian Wildlife experience, and endless lawn to stretch out on, Adventure World is the ultimate family holiday experience.

Take the kids to see one of the largest musical instruments on Earth - The Bell Tower. And there's an even better reason to go these school holidays - kids enter free with a paying adult. Climb to the top and marvel at the views and have a go at bell rining.

Take the kids to the Fremantle Prison these school holidays - they are guaranteed to have fun while learning about this amazing site. If your children are aged over 12 and love adventure, then go on an underground tunnels tour - there are family discounts available or go on the kids' only Prison Escape! Tour.
