Walking trails in the Perth Hills

Mundaring is in the heart of The Perth Hills and is only 30 minutes east of the city. Maps and information for the following walks are available from the Mundaring Visitor Centre.

 

Railway Reserves Heritage Trail

Railway Reserves Heritage Trail covers approximately 59 kilometres through the Shire of Mundaring. The trail follows the old Eastern Railway line on both sides of Great Eastern Highway, joining up at Mount Helena, in a 41 kilometre loop and then extending out to Wooroloo. This trail is a multi-use trail for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

Distance: 59km

Location: Railway Reserves Heritage Trail is located within the Shire of Mundaring and can be accessed via many entry points along the route, making it easy to start your journey from a variety of locations.

Starting Point: Mundaring Community Sculpture Park is a popular starting point and a 40 minute drive east of Perth.

Description:

  • Whether you explore the trail by walking, running, jogging or riding, fulfil your appetite for activity by choosing from different sections, challenges and lengths.
  • The trail covers a wide range of terrain and has an variety of scenic views and historical points.
  • Attractions Swan Valley Tunnel, John Forrest National Park, Chidlow's e Proclamation Train Memorial Sculpture, Wooroloo stone culvert and the charming settlements that evolved along the railway line, including Darlington, Parkerville and Mundaring. Note: there are large distances between some towns.
  • Dogs on a lead and horses are welcome along the Trail except in John Forrest National Park.
  • National Park fee applies for walkers who access the Trail from John Forrest National Park main car park.
  • Plenty of onsite information on trailhead signs and information boards.

Lake Leschenaultia Trail

An easy 5km walk or cycle around Lake Leschenaultia is a great way to see this lake. Also a great spot for swimming or having a picnic.

Distance: 5.2km or 20-40mins ride time, 1.5 hours walk time.

Location: 40km east of Perth at Lake Leschenaultia, Rosedale Rd, Chidlow.

Directions: 1 hour from Perth via Great Eastern Hwy.

Description:

  • An easy ride as the trail has few hills and no difficult sections which makes it an ideal track for amateur mountain bikers.
  • Onsite signage for trailhead signs and directional signs.
  • There is an entry fee to Lake Leschenaultia for vehicles.

John Forest Heritage Trail

This 10 km trail, 3.5 - 4.5hrs (return trip) follows the old railway reserve and takes in spectacular views and waterfalls. This trail includes the National Park Falls, Jane Brook Bridge, Deep Creek Bridge and the Railway Tunnel.

Distance: 10.2km or two hours 25 mins

Location: 26km east of Perth in John Forrest National Park.

Directions: 40mins from Perth via Great Eastern Hwy and Brooking Rd if starting on Victoria Rd.

Description:

  • An easy, scenic walk through the National Park.
  • The trail follows along the route of the old eastern railway line, with views of the National Park Falls and pool.
  • Onsite info includes trailhead signs (both ends) and interpretive plaques.
  • There is an entry fee for the National Park for vehicles.
  • Unsuitable for wheelchairs.

Weir Walk

A pleasant 2 km walk with wonderful views of the Helena Valley and Mundaring Weir, this trail passes No1 Pump Station.

Distance: 1.9km or 1 hour.

Location: 40km east of Perth at Mundaring Weir, Mundaring.

Directions: 1 hour from Perth via Great Eastern Hwy and Mundaring Weir Rd.

Description:

  • Outstanding views of the Helena River valley and the Weir.
  • The trail follows part of the old railway zigzag to a footbridge over the Goldfields water supply pipeline, through beautiful gardens and across the dam wall. It also includes the No 1 Pump Station, Mundaring Weir and Mundaring Weir Hotel.
  • The trail was built by the National Trust.
  • There is several flights of stairs during this walk and thus a reasonable level of fitness is recommended to complete the trail.
  • Several flights of steps makes it unsuitable for wheelchairs.
  • Onsite information includes a trailhead sign, directional and informational signs which include info on the history of the area and Goldfields Water Supply Scheme.

Trek the Trail

This amazing event is conducted every September and highlights a different section of the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail each year. Cultural interpretation, artworks, heritage and wildflowers are all highlighted on the day, with a festival at the end. Find more information visit www.trekthetrail.com.au.

Village Loop Trail Walks

These escorted walks are conducted throughout the season. The walks highlight the villages along the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail. A small charge to participate.
