Bush adventures
For those seeking an active experience in a natural environment, the Experience Perth region has plenty to offer, all within a close proximity of the CBD. From hiking, to mountain biking, to white water rafting and bush camping, there's an area nearby where you can get active, take in the great outdoors and escape city life all within the beauty of the bush.
Rich in majestic forest, tranquil waterways and cascading waterfalls, the Murray Region, about an hour south of Perth is an adventurers' paradise. The spectacular Serpentine Falls National Park is a popular area, along with Gooralong Creek near Jarrahdale where the year round brook, waterfalls, walk tracks and camping area make for a great day out.
Dwellingup, just 100 kilometres from Perth CBD, has become one of the most popular playgrounds for outdoor recreation. The Bibbulmun walk trail passes through the town and day walkers use Dwellingup as a start/finish point for shorter walks. The Munda Biddi long distance bike trail also passes through the town on its way to Collie. In Dwellingup you can hire mountain bikes, canoes and camping equipment and there are a number of adventure tours available.
For camping, fishing and canoeing, try the Lane Pool Reserve, near Dwellingup, a natural bush setting through which the Murray River flows. During winter the Murray River flows at its challenging best, offering everything from fast water rafting, through to exhilarating white water rafting. For those with a bit more adventurous spirit, try single person tube rafting.
In the Perth Hills, 45 minutes east of Perth, you will find an incredible selection of walking trails. In fact the Swan Valley and Perth Hills areas alone, offer more than 40 trails to explore. The walks wind their way through a series of 10 national parks, through forest, alongside waterfalls and by the banks of lakes.
The Bibbulmun Track starts in the Perth Hills at Kalamunda and the Munda Biddi Bike Trail also starts in the Hills at Mundaring.
Throughout the Avon Valley there are plentiful hiking and walk trails and for white water action, the Avon River is very popular. Located in the Valley, Northam is the starting point for Australia's wildest white water classic race. The gruelling 133 kilometre Avon Descent, is held on the first weekend in August every year.
