In the Avon Valley, an hours drive east of the city, uncongested airspace, open farmlands and great weather conditions create the perfect environment for a number of aviation pursuits.
Recreational opportunities that exist for the aviation enthusiast, include skydiving, gliding, flight training, hang gliding, micro lighting, paragliding and hot air ballooning.
Ballooning in the Avon is seasonal. Flights take place during the cooler months from early April to late November as the hot and windy summer weather is unsuitable for ballooning. The meeting place for the flight is Northam airfield and flights take off approximately an hour before sunrise and last 45 minutes to one hour.
The Avon Valley also offers many paragliding sites, including hills for foot launching and paddocks for tow launching.
There are a number of excellent operators providing both ballooning and skydiving tours to the Avon and will pickup in Perth at designated spots - see the tours section of this website for more information.
