Walking and cycling trails

Mundaring is renown for it's wonderful trails which are suitable for walking, cycling and horse riding. Below is a listing of trails within the area:-

Mundaring Weir

Situated in an attractive bush setting, Mundaring Weir is one of the world's greatest engineering projects. Completed in 1903, it is the start of the water pipeline that pumps water to agricultural areas and the Kalgoorlie goldfields, some 700 kilometeres in all. The Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail (a drive trail that follows the Pipeline) is also a feature of the area, as are several walking trails.

Number 1 Pump Station (formerly C Y O'Connor Museum)

At the foot of the weir is the No 1 Pump Station Museum, which honours the brilliant engineer, C Y O'Connor who also designed and built Fremantle Harbour. He endured widespread scepticism and tragically ended his life before the project's success was proven.

John Forrest National Park

John Forrest National Park is 28 kilometres east of Perth via the Great Eastern Highway and takes approximately 30 minutes from Perth by car. John Forest National Park, was established in 1898 as a reserve making it Western Australia's first National Park. The park has excellent recreational facilities including: barbecues, picnic areas, toilets, walk trails, horse trails and mountain bike trails. View the beautiful scenery throughout the park and spend time at Hovea Falls, Jane Brook and the National Park Falls. You will also be able to see a variety of native flora and fauna including: Bungarra Lizards, Honey Possums and New Holland Honeyeaters. John Forrest National Park forms an important part of The Hills Forest.

Lake Leschenaultia

Lake Leschenaultia is a stretch of clean clear water specially set aside by Mundaring Shire for leisure activities. Canoeing, swimming, cycling, walking, bird watching and barbecues can all be enjoyed in this bushland park covering some 168 hectares. With ample parking and plenty of space to spread out, sheltered tables, a kiosk and a cafe, the lake provides the ideal location for family get togethers and alfresco parties. Tent only camping sites are available by advance booking. The park is open every day of the year from 8.30 am. Booking Fee applies and camping charges. No dogs are permitted sorry!

Perth Hills National Parks Centre

Perth Hills National Parks Centre, operated by the Department of Environment and Conservation (formerly CALM) and situated within Mundaring National Park, is the best place to get information on national parks in the Perth hills. There are many trails available from here, including the famous Bibbulmun Track (which passes through the middle of the Centre) and the close by Munda Biddi Off-Road Cycling Trail. Add to your forest experience by taking part in a fun Nearer to Nature activity for people of all ages. Forest camping is available at reasonable prices. Mundaring Sunday Markets

Enjoy a day at the Mundaring Sunday Markets and combine your visit with a tour of the Perth Hills many and varied attractions both natural and historical. Indoor and outdoor venues feature a great variety of stalls featuring hand-crafted goods and quality creative art products, locally grown fresh produce and plants, home made food stuffs and many other delights that will take your fancy. Markets are open 9.00am – 3.00pm every second Sunday of the month.

Mundaring Arts Centre

Located in the heart of the Mundaring, the Mundaring Arts Centre (MAC) is a not for profit community based organisation. Since 1997, MAC has been helping the local broader community to participate in, and enjoy arts projects and activities. Visitors are invited to come and browse in the relaxing atmosphere of the Centre’s Gallery Shop where they will find an exciting selection of fine art and unique handcrafted items by local artists. There is also the opportunity to enjoy the varied, ongoing program of exhibitions by emerging and leading West Australian artists in the main Gallery. Gallery hours are weekdays 10am – 5pm, weekends and public holidays 10am – 4pm

Mundaring and Hills District Museum

The Mundaring and Hills Historical Society (MHHS) was formed in 1989 to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the Shire of Mundaring. MHHS have operated the Mundaring District Museum since 1997 in the old Mundaring School building, which houses a permanent display about people, places and events of historical interest in the Shire. MHHS is able to assist schools and other groups in the organization of community-based historical events, compiling local history information and guest speakers.

Nearer to Nature

The Department of the Environment and Conservation’s Nearer to Nature’s activity program provides fun, interactive, nature-based activities that are designed to get you exploring and enjoying Perth's uniquely beautiful outdoor areas. The team can also custom design activities for groups of any size, you tell us what type of experience you are looking for and we are sure to have something to meet your needs. Parks and Picnic Spots

Mundaring has some beautiful grassy parks which provide perfect picnis setting. Some of them like the Fred Jacoby and Sculpture parks have BBQ facilities. Visit the Mundaring Visitor Centre (located in the heart of town on Great Eastern Hwy) when you arrive to get the full list.
