Perth Hills food and wine
Located approximately 45 minutes east of the city, the Perth Hills Wine Region stretches along the Darling Scarp from Chittering to Serpentine and came of age in April 1999 when given the official status as a gazetted wine-growing region. It has already gained a reputation as a producer of premium wines in Western Australia.
Viticulture has been carried on in the picturesque Perth Hills for more than a century. The first vineyard was planted in Darlington in the 1880's, followed by Glen Hardy Winery in Glen Forrest in 1896.
The Region's elevation, 400 meters above sea level provides climatic conditions for the production of intensely flavoured grapes for premium wines.
The best way to explore is to follow a wine trail, which comprises of award-winning vineyards located within a few kilometres of each other. The vineyards are usually marked with barrel signs at their entry and wine maps are available at the Mundaring Visitor Centre.
The vineyards ( many of which have cellar door sales ) comprising the Perth Hills Region produce all traditional grape varieties, and newer ones - Zinfandel Pedro Ximenes, Malbec, Tempranillo, Taminga and Viognier to name a few.
The region is renowned for its stunning scenery and offers visitors a range of premium wines complemented by exceptional food. The wineries also provide an excellent base for exploring the rest of the beautiful Perth Hills.
