Things to see and do
Pinjarra Heritage Trail Walk
The Heritage Trail walk is a pleasant walk through the town taking in all the sights and attractions Pinjarra has to offer. The tree lined banks of the Murray River, the pedestrian suspension bridge and the beautiful old buildings can all be seen in a leisurely 1.2 km walk which should not take more than an hour.
Pinjarra Sofa
The Murray River running through Cantwell Park is an integral part of life in Pinjarra. As such, the Shire of Murray believed it was “the place” for the sofa. To bring the sofa to colourful life, Fremantle Arts Centre worked with Main Street Pinjarra and artist Lesley King-Dowding. Lesley organised workshops with Pinjarra Primary School, Fairbridge STAR Program and the general community. The kids came up with “you need hands to make a community” while older members of Pinjarra wanted to celebrate the river, the flora and fauna of the area. The Pinjarra Sofa can be found at Cantwell Park in Pinjarra.
Heritage Rose Garden
This unique garden is the only public garden devoted solely to heritage roses in Western Australia. It contains an important collection of over 400 roses, many of which are rare. The garden was stated by Noel Frost in the early 1980’s to complement the historic buildings of the Edenvale Complex. The Memorial Garden, a tribute to the fallen servicemen of the district, was added later by caretaker Ron Ward. Although the peak time for the roses is October through December, some blooms can be seen at any time of the year. A guide listing the roses can be obtained at The Pinjarra Visitor Centre.
The Barn and Art & Craft Centre
The Barn was rebuilt in 1994 as a Murray Joblink LEAP training project for the unemployed, and extended in 2003 to house the Peel Potters. The extension complements the Art & Craft Centre Building, which was once the office of the Public Works Department. It was relocated to Edenvale from the corner of Roe Street and Pinjarra Road, and opened in 1983 to accommodate the Murray Arts and Craft Groups. This Centre displays a large variety of art and craft pieces all produced locally and available for sale.
Roger May Museum
Commenced in 1993 and officially opened in 2001, the Museum is built from rammed earth, timber and iron sheeting. Vehicles, machinery and farming equipment from yesteryear are all housed in this building, which was named after a well known local enthusiast of old engines and vehicles. The Museum is manned by volunteers who have over the years lovingly restored a lot of the items on display.
Heritage Tearooms
The Heritage Tearooms are the perfect place to have lunch, a snack or just a cuppa, either indoors or alfresco. The friendly staff will make your visit to the Tearooms an enjoyable one. All the food is prepared fresh daily, and highly recommended.
