York has 4 heritage walks varying in distance from 1.5kms to 6kms.
Avon Terrace
This walk is 1.5kms long and takes in the historic heritage buildings along Avon Terrace. Some of the buildings are: Troopers Cottage, The Post Office, Old Gaol, Courthouse and Police Station, Motor Museum, Castle Hotel, Sargent's Pharmacy, Imperial Inn, Town Hall, Settlers House, York Hotel, Edwards Building, Western Australia Bank, Old Council Chambers, Union Bank, CWA House, Bank of Australasia, Holy Trinity Church, Holy Trinity Rectory.
Blandstown
This walk is 2kms and concentrates on the little hamlet of Blandstown. Blandstown was developed as a group of cottages and village shops at the gate near what was one of the most substantial farms in the Avon Valley in the 1830's. Points of interest along this walk: Site of St Johns Church and Cemetery, Former Kings Head Hotel, Bakery and Residence, Wheeler Street, Langsford House, Former Albion Hotel, Early Cottages, Balladong Farm, Redmile House and Parkers Bridge.
Commerce, institutions and industry
This walk is 2kms long and takes you past some historic buildings showing how the early settlers, like John Henry Monger prospered. Some of the buildings of interest along the walk are: Monger's Store, Sandlewood Yard, Wagon Yard and Horse Stalls, Old York Hotel and Stables, Monger's Bridge, Wood Shed, Faversham House and Stables, Uniting Church and Manse, York Primary School, Parish Hall, The Presbytery, St Patrick's Church, St Patricks Convent School, Convent of Mercy, Railway Station, The Flour Mill and The Freemason's Hall.
The East Bank
This is the longest walk about 6kms. The East Bank settlement, although it commenced in 1851 with the establishment of the convict hiring depot it did not take off until Monger's Bridge was built in 1861 that more people moved to this site. The fertile banks of the Avon River lent themselves to orchard and market gardening. Some of the places of interest along this walk are: Clifford Street, York Grammer School, Old York Hospital, Residency Museum, Laurelville, Pool Street, Kairey Cottage, Stone Cottages, Marvick Barn, Mt Brown Lookout and York Cemetery.
