The Peel region since its early days has been an important agricultural area. As with much of Western Australia, there were vineyards established during the 1930's by Italian immigrants, but it wasn't until the 1970's that sustained development took hold.
Blessed with superb grape growing soils and a favourable climate, the region now boasts 20 producing wineries of which many have cellar door wine sales and produce award-winning wines. Peel is particularly renowned for its Chenin Blanc and Shiraz, however Chardonnay, Verdelho and Cabernet Sauvignon are all performing well.
The region's major wineries all have their own unique character and welcome visitors to taste their vintages and enjoy a delightful meal or a relaxed picnic-style lunch amongst the vines. For the perfect day out, create your own wine trail past wineries and through stretches of forest and pristine bush.
Baldivis Wines is just a few kilometres off the coastal highway near Rockingham at the gateway to the Peel Region. Close to Mandurah amidst the Tuart trees is the beautiful setting of Peel Winery. Port Bouvard Winery is a boutique wine producer, located within minutes of the Yalgorup Eco Park on the shores of Lake Clifton and, not to be missed is the award-winning Millbrook Winery in the beautiful Jarrahdale Hills.
Fresh produce
One of the tributes to Peel's agricultural history is the culture of outdoor markets in the region. There's nothing quite like the bustling atmosphere of local producers, wholesaling fresh food, cottage craft and assorted curiosities.
Or for a completely farm-gate experience, take a drive down the Peel leg of the South Western Highway. Known as the Harvest Highway there is plenty of stops for those looking for all that is fresh and home-made.
